Future
It seems that the price of my web host has risen significantly and although I’m glad to have gotten my new site up I don’t think I’ll be able to pay the cost to keep it running
I’m very sad about this. There’s just not enough people coming and clicking in my sponsers and the site isn’t able to maintain itself. This will not stop me in posting new videos however. My Youtube channel will remain and I will use that as my main website for now until I can figure out how get a profitable website.
I have plans to make a “How to make brickfilms” video which has been highly wanted by the fans. Check at my Youtube channel for updates on that.
Announcing 1st Retrogram!
Howdy folks! So I just wanted to announce first of all that I’m very serious about these mini documentaries and I will release the first five retrogram episodes one a week for five weeks. And just to give you a sneak peek into the future I am announcing that the first retrogram will be a look back on the earliest successful cartoon show Walt Disney produced–The Alice Comedies.
I’ll try to go over as much of the history of the Disney brothers and their small animation studio as I can in less than ten minutes. I will also show photos and rare footage of these charming little films. The retrogram (I hope) will be informative, insightful, and fun all wound into one!
That’s all I’m saying for now so check back again when the first retrogram goes on the air!
The Little Wooden Man
The Little Wooden Man came from an idea that a friend of mine made a while back revolving around the question “What happened when Pinocchio grew up?”
Currently we’re developing the idea into a feature but for now I went ahead and applied the concept to short subject narrative. It was tricky deciding what exactly to show and say in a 12 minute film. I eventually decided to write about Pinocchio’s very last moment on earth as a human some 50 years after he turned into a real boy. Both Dan and I found the reverse Pinocchio story to be well fitting however the narrative delivery was still tricky. It is important to keep in mind that this film has become one of my student projects and has fallen under heavy limitations.
The Interesting back story of this film began last quarter (Sept 2009) when I was feverishly trying to decide what film (story) I wanted to make that I would actually enjoy making. I had written over half a dozen short films over the summer which were alright and other people liked them although I wasn’t fond of. The day came to turn in scripts and I had a moment of inspiration(?). Just the day before my friend Dan had just asked me about the concept of Pinocchio’s story. After having a few laughs it hit me that this idea could be fascinating to audiences. Not to mention there’s a lot one could expand upon. So I took a hit and didn’t turn in my script that day but rather went home immediately and quickly whipped out a first draft of the Pinocchio script to make it in time for the 9:00 pm email to the professor.
Of course the frightening thing now was I had only three weeks to “Lock” the script and begin work on pre-production! Everyone else in the class had the luxury of having written their scripts during the summer but now was the time to kick my skills into over drive in order to pump out a film I could be proud to say was mine.
Throughout prepping the film I suddenly had great respect for filmmakers like Terry Gilliam because my “Little” film was getting bigger and things weren’t falling in place as nicely as I hoped. I had to let a student producer go and pick up the task of producing the project myself with production costs starting to climb over my limit. Fortunately I had the blessing of a man named Patrick Matheny show interest in the film. He jumped on board to my great relief.
After helping every week with other student’s film projects it was finally my turn. The filming went very smoothly and we finished ahead of schedule.
After a mere 10 weeks from its “concept” the film of Pinocchio’s last day on earth as a human were shot and in the can ready for editing.
Announcing “Retrograms”
You may be wondering “What the heck is a ‘retrogram’!??” as you feverishly search google for an explanation. But it’s something I have invented. What it is is a short (one-five minute) retrospective episode about either a movie, television show, actor, director, animator, etc. in which I delve back to the past and reminisce.
Examples of this will be something like “G.I. Joe, the original 80’s cartoon” or maybe “Laurel & Hardy”. As you can already see there will be a WIDE variety to the retrograms and they will be comedies as well. I don’t know if they will be successful but making a fun web series is what I’m basically aiming for here. So check back again to see what and when the first retrogram episode will be!
Just busy busy…
Now that I’ve finally got this website thing figured out I can take a break and start working on movies/games and schoolwork. (In that order).
So being as this website is set up like a blog I will go ahead and begin posting blog things on occasion on this website. So if you find yourself fascinated with me and/or my work then please check back because this website will be where I first post anything the happens.
Currently I’m still at school and even though I have most of my major requirements finished I’m now having to complete several GE courses
So no film production classes for now but I’m hoping to do some things on my own. Yes, there are several projects I have in the works. As you can see to your right there are quite a number of projects at staggard stages of development. The Little Wooden man is in post-production and will begin posting photos and info about that soon. That and I have an idea for another short 16mm film. Well several of them actually which is why I haven’t begun yet because I’m trying to decide on what story I want to go with.
So check back if ya can and please comment if you like. I would like to see this site blossom into anything really! Doug out.
